As seen in VG: How to Stay Warm with Norwegian Design and Technology

Linda Tollefsen and Torstein Langeland have swapped heavy winter coats for battery-powered clothing from Heat Experience. With heating elements and app control, they can adjust the warmth as needed.

“I originally come from the west coast of Norway and thought I was immune to cold and damp weather – until I experienced my first winter in Trondheim. The cold here seeps into your bones in a way I wasn’t used to,” says Linda Tollefsen, a mother of young children.

It’s perhaps no coincidence that Trondheim, known as Norway’s tech capital, is also home to Heat Experience. Six years ago, Tollefsen discovered that battery-powered heated clothing was being made just down the road:

“I still use the jacket I got as a gift back then! It’s both stylish and of superb quality. When it rains, I wear it as a mid-layer to stay warm under a light raincoat. When it’s chilly but dry, it works perfectly as a standalone jacket,” she explains.

“It’s brilliant during autumn and spring when temperatures fluctuate – or when I’m out and about with my son in the woods. I turn on the heat when we sit down for lunch. Before, I always needed to bring extra clothes for these breaks, but that’s no longer necessary,” she says.

“The jacket works just as well for horseback rides across Dovrefjell as it does for early mornings at the cabin before the fire is lit,” says Tollefsen.

The battery lasts all day, and Langeland wears only a shirt and blazer under the jacket. In fact, he’s replaced two heavy winter coats weighing 3.5 kilograms in total with a single jacket weighing just 1 kilogram, including the battery.

“My old ‘polar jackets’ are retired. So are the extra wool base layers that made me freeze when biking and sweat once I arrived at work. The only extra piece of clothing I need now is rain pants – it does rain here occasionally,” he says with a smile.
